How to Build a Carousel (cont.)

Once the animals have been sanded and ground smooth they are painted with special white paint. Then Milo spray-paints the animals with lots of color--just like the drawings. To make the animals look more like the drawings, Betsy and Matt work for hours on each figure, adding crayon marks in just the right amount and colors. When Betsy and Matt are finished, Milo inspects each figure, adding the last details. Then the paint is protected with many coats of hard, clear varnish.

Meanwhile, some of the figures are at Fabricon, being fitted by Marvin onto the carousel mechanism. Ethan and Ken are working on assembling many of the ornaments that decorate and cover mechanism parts. Also, Milo asked his eight-year-old friend Jemma to draw a crown to decorate twelve of the frames that encircle the outside rounding boards of the carousel. Jemma drew three crowns, and Milo liked them so much, he is using all three plus one will be used on the wooden ride token.
